Ideas for Double-Duty Rooms

As people spend more time at home, and are moving less, they’re asking the rooms in their house to work harder for their lifestyles. Maximizing your space and making some of the rooms in your home into multifunctional spaces gives you more flexibility and an opportunity to make your home into the space you really need. These multifunctional room ideas do double duty in your home:

  • Add a home office to your dining room, by turning a sideboard or bar space into a desk.
  • Combine your bedroom with an office by choosing a day bed instead of a traditional bed. Your desk here can also serve as a vanity or bedside table.
  • Have a guest bedroom, but infrequent guests? Opt for a built-in “window seat” bed with storage underneath, comfortable chairs, and library shelves. Then you’ve got yourself a quiet reading room when you’re not hosting out-of-towners.
  • Or, combine your guestroom with your home office using a large Secretary Desk as an anchor piece in the room. When your office is not in use, simply close the cabinet.
  • Use your mudroom as a homework space for kids by adding a long shelf-like desk against one wall, and bulletin board/chalkboard space. They’ll hang their coats, remove their shoes and get to work in a space all their own.
  • Install a crafting station to your laundry room, your garage workbench area, or your mudroom to create your art projects out of the way of your home’s major traffic areas.
