Have this on hand for emergencies, and the power outages of winter storms won’t stop daily life for your family. Consider converting a closet or basement space into a space for emergency essentials — even better if the closet is under your stairs and can double as a place to sit out the worst storms. By creating a home emergency resource center you’ll feel better prepared.
Include these 7 essentials:
- Light Sources. Choose a hand-crank flashlight, a battery-operated ones, and a few solid long-burning candles as well as matches in case the electricity goes off and leaves you in the dark.
- Phone numbers. Keep the numbers of your utilities to report outages and monitor progress on restoration.
- Warmth. Hand warmer packs, extra sweaters and blankets, beanies and gloves can help if the heat goes out.
- Water. Stock a supply of bottled water in case your pipes freeze and you are unable to get water in your home.
- Food. Stock non-perishable and easy-to-eat packaged dried fruit and nuts, tuna in pouches, crackers, granola bars, peanut butter, beef jerky, and don’t forget plastic utensils, napkins and paper plates if needed.
- First-aid Kit. Handle minor injuries effortlessly using a basic first aid kit containing bandages, antibiotic ointment, gauze, adhesive tape, scissors, and more.
- Battery pack phone recharger. Make sure to keep at least one phone on by having a couple battery packs fully charged during the winter.
